SERVICE & PHILANTHROPY
Kappa Alpha Theta's commitment to service is a longstanding value we hold dear to our hearts. For the past 25 years, Theta has stood with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to impact the lives of foster children. Theta also supports the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, dedicated to raising money for scholarships and grants. Our chapter puts on an annual philanthropy event called "Rock the CASA" to raise money for Court Appointed Special Advocates.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
Mission: The National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association, together with its state and local member programs, supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every abused or neglected child in the United States can be safe, have a permanent home and the opportunity to thrive.
CASA is an organization that provides mentors for abused, abandoned, and neglected children in the foster care system. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for the child. For many of these children, their CASA is the one constant adult presence in their lives. Last year, more than 76,000 CASA and guardian ad litem (GAL) volunteers helped more than 251,000 abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes.
Kappa Alpha Theta lives by this motto of "I am for the child" and we are proud to support CASA. To learn more and donate, visit: casaforchildren.org
Rock the CASA
Rock the CASA is our chapter's annual philanthropy event. Our event is an evening of live music and performances held on LMU's Lawton Plaza. We have a variety of student performances, including musicians, DJs, dance squads, acapella groups, and improv teams. A representative from CASA speaks at the event to remind everyone of the great cause. Rock the CASA also has philanthropic vendors, such as bead relief, with items available for purchase. LMU students and faculty come out and enjoy the performances and the many food trucks. For the past 3 years, Rock the CASA has raised over $10,000 annually for Court Appointed Special Advocates.
Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation
We are also proud to support the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation. Its mission is: to secure and manage resources for the educational, leadership, and philanthropic programs of the Fraternity and for the scholastic, professional, and service pursuits of its members to help them reach their fullest potential and make a difference in the world.
The foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable and educational tax-exempt organization, independent from the Fraternity. Created by Thetas for Thetas, Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation is dedicated to raising money for scholarships, educational and leadership grants, and financial hardship grants for our Kappa Alpha Theta members.
Awarding more than $1 million annually, what began in 1960 as a means of raising funds to support the philanthropic and educational opportunities for members of the Fraternity continues today as a pillar of support for its individual members, chapters, and the Fraternity at large. Other Service Opportunities
Service is a big part of of our sisters' lives. We have Theta sisters who are also members of LMU service orgs and other volunteer groups. Across our chapter we have members volunteering for hospitals, animal shelters, children's centers, elementary schools, The Boys and Girls Club, Alternative Break trips, and service trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica, and more. Our chapter members completed a total of 9,336 service hours between 2015-2016, the highest out of any sorority or fraternity at LMU. We are so proud of the service Kappa Alpha Theta contributes to our community and beyond.
